Week 2
Well, apart from the whole watch-me-set-djbdns-up-in-my-sleep thing, I think I've actually managed to get a nicely functional Gentoo system working. GUI works, mouse works, sound works, etc., so now I get to iron out the little bugs.


Namely, the scrollbuttons. When you use Linux, you set up the mouse based on the connection and number of buttons the mouse has. Each scroll button is considered two buttons, up and down. So based on that, my mouse has 9 buttons. Now, with X11.org, you get a nice little utility called xev, which is essentially a little window that tells you what buttons on the mouse you're pushing. So. Theoretically, my scrollers would be buttons 6/7 and 8/9, and it's set up as such. However, xev isn't detecting the scrollers. Which is mildly pissant. Especially since I'm sitting there wasting time on just about every page I go to, wondering why the scroll button isn't working.

Apart from that, the only other little thing I want to figure out is how to increase the screen size, since 1024x768 seems cramped somehow. The multiple desktops help, but it feels like I don't have enough screen space to do what I want to do. And unfortunately, the Desktop Preferences only let me set it at 1024x768 max. There might be a way to do it, but unfortunately, it'll probably require knowing my monitor's exact stats. Which I don't. Since I got it used. And old. And I can't find it anywhere on Dell's website. Poo.
